Upcoming 2010 Events

JULY:

Our church helps with the annual PIRD hymn sing and ice cream social on July 18 at 4 pm in the fellowship hall. Contact Trinette if you are bringing ice cream.

AUGUST:

We collect school supplies and monetary donations for Barium Springs, a home for abused and neglected children. This home helps families in crisis, at-risk preschool-age children, at-risk students in school, and children and adults needing therapy and counseling. A list containing their ‘needs’ list will be out in July. There will be boxes in the fellowship hall and narthex for your items. After the collection, in mid August, we take the supplies and tour the facility. The tour is special. Contact Trinette

OCTOBER:

We provide dinner for 60 people at the Prodigal’s House. This is a Christian community serving people with histories of substance abuse. After dinner, we join in their moving church service. Our date is Oct. 18. Contact Trinette

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER:

We participate in giving presents to the residents of the Children’s Home in Banner Elk. You will see the ’angel trees’ in December with wishes from the children.  We also participate in the Bethesda Center’s White Christmas. This center helps the homeless. Bethesda sends out a wish list to help provide warmth for those in need.

As you can see, our servant church is about helping many in need. The Local Missions committee needs more help from those of you who always thought about volunteering, but could not find the time. Can you provide food and drop it by the church? Someone else can deliver it. Is there a spot with your name on it this year?? How are we doing?
Did you know that every dollar and every item of food given to Crisis Control Ministry during the months of March and April will be matched by the Feinstein Foundation Challenge? Each item of food counts as $1.00 donated.
Our March donations of food to Crisis Control totaled 66 items. Those items donated included potatoes, cooking oil, saltine crackers, cookies, grits, peanut butter, dry beans, rice and spaghetti. We collected 14 cans of soup for ACS and toothbrushes, toothpaste, disposable razors and 24 cans of green beans for Samaritan Ministries.
April 20 is our next Servant Sunday. As you shop during the coming weeks, please remember our brothers and sisters who depend on our donations for their livelihood.

Servant Sunday
We are designating the 3rd Sunday of every month for the collection of key food items needs for local mission support.
At a recent meeting of Salem Presbytery a sermon entitled "You Feed Them" was presented in dialog with God. Many excuses were given whey we could not provide for those less fortunate but God always came back with a powerful booming voice "YOU FEED THEM". A song sung throughout the presentation was entitled "There Is Enough". This was by far the most moving presbytery meeting this writer has had the privilege of attending. Friends, I'm convinced that God has given us more than enough and is depending on us to share. Let's fill up the altar on March 16, (Palm Sunday) with food for our neighbors who are living in poverty.
